In general, there are four main options for managing asbestos containing material :-
Management
You know it is there, the material is in reasonably good condition and not releasing fibres etc. You can then advise your staff to be careful of it if necessary and you can warn any contractors etc. who are working in that area - you can leave it where it is.
Seal
For example, an untreated asbestos insulating board may be in a work area with the likelyhood of releasing fibres. Rather than incur the cost and disturbance of removal, this material can be sealed with special varnish to inhibit fibre release.
Encapsulate
If asbestos containing material is on the outside edge of a pillar in a corridor, this can be boxed in with battens and plywood to encapsulate the asbestos and prevent fibre release.
Removal
As a last resort, damaged, aged or exposed asbestos containing material can be removed. This should be done by contractors insured for asbestos work and in the case of asbestos insulating board, sprayed asbestos and similar materials, it's removal MUST be done by an asbestos removal contractor licensed by the Health and Safety Executive.
